For Hire: His Wife Was Available For Sex on Craigslist

Mad James

Craigslist hit the news again recently when it was learned that a man forced his wife to have sexual encounters and listed the services on the website.  This may not be the first time in history that this has happened, but when you add the story to Craigslist, it gets headlines.

The story suggests that she feared she would never see her young child again unless she complied with her husband’s scheme which took her to eight states.  Her husband regularly posted ads, promoting her for sex. She claimed he would arrange the encounters, then demand she immediately deposit the money she was paid into his bank account.

Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster reacted to the arrest last Wednesday in an e-mailed statement to The Associated Press.

“Criminal exploitation is reprehensible, and Craigslist works with law enforcement when called upon to apprehend and prosecute those responsible,” Buckmaster said in the statement. “Misuse of Craigslist for criminal purposes is extremely unwise, since an electronic trail to the perpetrator is inevitably created.”

Of course, many would ask, why did it take eight states of these encounters before the woman realized she could call authorities for help?  Her husband certainly wasn’t a genius and it’s hard to believe that he had the ability to control her mind so powerfully.

What’s creepy is that there are thousands of sleezebags out there that read this and think it’s a good idea.  Then there are others who recoil.

The Worried Worker realizes that this kind of stuff is going to happen no matter what, but how on earth can it get onto a website so perfectly that readers in eight different states read it, then buy the services?

Is the problem the crime, or the marketing of it on the web – and is there some point where the web is going to be regulated so that it is no longer World Wide?

Send me your thoughts.
