Extended jobless benefits end for up to 250,000 Americans out of work because the Senate closed up shop without a deal to extend filing deadlines. These unemployed also won’t be able to sign up for the 65% federal subsidy for COBRA unemployment insurance. And, many have been unemployed for at least six months and already living paycheck to paycheck.
Basically, Senate Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on passing a House version of the extension of deadlines to apply for federal unemployment benefits and the COBRA health insurance subsidy – they didn’t do their jobs and now others will, again, suffer.
Even if they move quickly (attempted humor there) any package would take a couple of months to trickle into the checking accounts of the unemployed.
About 12 million people are getting jobless benefits right now. About one in 10 Americans are out of work and a disgusting 45% have been unemployed for at least six months.
Federal unemployment benefits kick in after the basic state-funded 26 weeks of coverage expire. During the downturn, Congress has approved up to an additional 73 weeks.
