Get it off your chest

The Worried Worker (W2)

Is talking about your problems really a good idea? Conventional wisdom says yes. Yet according to a study that originally appeared in the journal Developmental Psychology, there’s some risk involved for girls, more than for boys.  (has nothing to do with the size of chest, just gender)

The study found that girls who talked excessively about their problems with a friend, including rehashing the problems and dwelling on the associated negative feelings, actually exacerbated their problems and increased the symptoms of anxiety and depression of both parties.

Boys talking about their problems weren’t studied because boys make most of their problems up, apparently, and turn them into exploits more than problems.

“Having anxiety symptoms (and presumably, associated heightened levels of worries and concerns) and a high-quality friend to talk to may provide a uniquely reinforcing context for co-rumination,” says Amanda Rose, lead author of the study.

The Worried Worker isn’t sure about co-ruminating, or even if it’s legal. But, getting problems off your chest offers a lift that we all need, regardless of any studies.

Send your chests to Dear W2 or Vent.

I’m small chested so I can’t carry much anyway, but it does help to talk to a friend.
