Dear W2
I found out that some people in my company make more than me. I do the same work, even more, and they’re getting more money. I’ve been here longer, been loyal, work late when they want, come in early. I want to get fair pay. What should I do? Underpaid in California.
Dear Underpaid -
Wow….I understand your bizpain when a peer makes more and you’ve been employed longer. Kind of sucks and doesn’t make you feel very good does it? Better we work on a solution vs. letting it fester.
I’m not sure if you’re aware of how the employment system works? So let me give you a manager’s / employer’s point of view.
The rule of thumb is…..when you join a new company ‘in most cases’ you can negotiate a higher salary then you currently make. Most people leave a job for better opportunities; which can include salary, benefits, commute, etc.
If you are hell bent on knowing why others are compensated at a different rate; you’ll need to know some additional info on your co-worker(s) such as; do they have different skill sets, education, years of experience, etc? Are they slated to take on additional duties & responsibilities?
Now, let’s deal with your specific solutions. I strongly suggest before you march into your boss’s office and demand more $$$$; make sure you’ve proven yourself and have added more value to the firm. Take note of all the individual contributions you make and compare them to others. If you can prove your output is grater; then ask to speak with your manager. Make it a warm and friendly meeting…maybe even invite them to lunch? See if you can schedule a meeting in the a.m. when they’ve not had chance to stress out over the day’s issues. Be prepared, look good, and speak calmly (no emotions) with facts. If not…. you may not get the outcome you’re looking for.
Your bizpain is real…..so what are you going to do about it?
